In Year 5, we continue the Spelling Progression which has been adopted across the school. Children are taught how to use their phonics skills to approach unfamiliar words while also learning the spelling rules of the English language. We then expect these rules to be applied in their writing. Where children have particular issues with spelling, they may receive additional support to help with the acquisition of common sight words and further guidance in relation to the application of a Grapheme Chart.
Year 5 children will also pay specific attention to the statutory word lists for children in years 3 & 4 and 5 & 6 which form part of the national curriculum.
