Reading is an essential part of the curriculum in every year group. In Year 2 , our English lessons are linked to quality English literature. Each child also participates in weekly reading activities , which include Guided Reading sessions, reading for fluency , reading for pleasure and story telling activities. Where children are not secure in decoding text, they will continue with Phonics First guided sessions.
In Year 2, we ask that the children practise daily reading at home. They have a home reading book, which matches their reading level, parents are asked to use the reading record log to record when the children have read. Children also have the opportunity to read at least twice weekly to an adult in school, who will check their reading level and support the child in changing their reading book.
Reading for Pleasure.
In year 2, reading aloud to pupils is a fundamental part of our everyday. Adults take every opportunity to read aloud to the children. Whether its a picture book, poem, a traditional tale, story with a twist, modern tale or a non-fiction book, we follow the interests of the children and love reading to the class as much as they love to listening to us exploring language and reading aloud.
