Every day a learning adventure

OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning)

Welcome to OPAL Play at Milton Park Primary School

Milton Park Primary is proud to be part of the OPAL Primary Programme, a nationally recognised initiative that transforms school playtimes into rich, active, and imaginative experiences for every child.

What is OPAL?
OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning) is the UK’s leading not-for-profit organisation focused on improving play in schools. It has helped over 2,000 schools and 1.5 million children enjoy better playtimes.

Why is play so important?
Play is essential for children's development. It supports:

  • academic learning – through real-world experiences.
  • physical health – by encouraging movement and activity.
  • social skills – helping children learn to cooperate and build relationships.
  • mental wellbeing – as children rate play as vital to their happiness.
  • emotional growth – by exploring feelings and learning resilience.

What will change at playtime?
Children will enjoy:

  • access to the whole school grounds all year round.
  • a variety of materials and spaces for imaginative play.
  • opportunities to mix with children of all ages.
  • staff trained to support and enrich play.

Will children get dirty or be at risk?
Yes, they might get muddy—and that’s okay! Active play is vital for health and development. OPAL works with schools to ensure uniforms are suitable for movement and outdoor activity.
As for safety, OPAL schools typically see 80% fewer accidents than others. Risk is managed carefully to help children learn safely.

How can parents help?

  • Provide waterproof coats and wellies.
  • Donate safe, creative items for play (known as “loose parts”).
  • Encourage outdoor play at home.
