Author Visit - David Gatward
On Wednesday 29th June we were fortunate to work with one of the UK’s leading fiction writers, David Gatward. David spent a considerable part of his life wondering what it would be like to be any one of the following (in no particular order): actor, musician, carpenter, army officer, writer, helicopter pilot and highwayman. Eventually writing took over thanks to a couple of ghost writing contracts and, to his own surprise, a book deal.
Children and parents from across the school took part in exciting activities linked to inspiring and motivating writing. The day began with an assembly sharing the importance of story structure and involved lots of audience participation. The rest of the morning saw David working with different age groups on storytelling, creating fun characters and using story cubes to inspire ideas and produce a story plan .
During the afternoon, children on the Achievement for All programme had the opportunity to work with David alongside their parents. An amazing amount of fun was had by all and it was great to have the opportunity to tell stories, share ideas and learn helpful tips and advice from the expert. Thank you to all those parents who were able to join us. “What a tremendous day;” “I didn’t realize it could be this much fun” and “I don’t want to go home” were just some of the comments made during the day.
